These three symptoms share one cause, and it isn't a failed download — the bytes are fine, your player just can't decode what's inside them. On 24 July we opened our own tool, pasted a Reel, and watched it fail. The health endpoint said 200 OK. Containers: healthy, seven weeks uptime, zero restarts. Redis: 1 ms. Everything we monitored was fine, and nothing that mattered worked. Here's the full teardown — a proxy pool that had been returning 407 since June, a yt-dlp four months out of date, and the monitor we built to catch it that paged us falsely four days later.

You paste a link to a ten-slide carousel and one JPG lands in your downloads folder. Nothing errored. The tool looked like it worked. What actually happened is that Instagram returned the post but not its children, and most downloaders have no way to tell that apart from a single-image post — because structurally, at that moment, it looks exactly like one.

Downloads that feel slow are rarely slow where you think. A Reel that takes ten seconds from click to file spends a fraction of that transferring bytes to you — the rest goes to a proxy handshake, a manifest fetch, two streams pulled from Instagram's CDN, and a mux. Here's the whole ledger, including the queue that can make it stop entirely.

Instagram never stored a filename for that photo, because Instagram never needed one. What lands in your downloads folder is a CDN storage key with an extension bolted on — three numbers, an underscore convention, and a trailing letter that tells you which rendition you got. Once you can read it, the string stops being noise and starts being useful.

The same tool, the same account, sixty seconds apart: a Reel downloads at 1080p without complaint and a photo from the same profile returns nothing. That looks like a broken feature. It's actually two different content delivery systems with two different tolerances, and images are the strict one — partly because images are the cheap thing to scrape at scale.

Five days ago we wrote about catching Meta flip a @natgeo Reel from H.264 baseline to VP9 between two parses. The same Reel — same shortcode, same xpv_asset_id — is now back on H.264 baseline. We pulled it from a New York CDN edge on 2026-04-28 and again from a San Jose edge 24 hours later. Identical encoding profile both times. Whatever VP9 experiment caught us by surprise on 4/23, it's over for this asset. The full efg decode below, plus three theories for why.

We pulled a parse of the @natgeo Reel DH56yy7p3lZ at roughly noon UTC on 2026-04-23. The vencode_tag field of the signed CDN URL read ig-xpvds.clips.c2-C3.dash_baseline_1_v1 — Meta's baseline H.264 encoding profile. We pulled it again eight hours later during a bulk-mode test. Same Reel, same shortcode. The vencode_tag now read ig-xpvds.clips.c2-C3.dash_vp9-basic-gen2_1080p. Meta had re-encoded the asset into VP9 between our two tests. This is the first VP9-in-production observation we've caught live, and it has implications.

Most of that is fine. Some of it crosses a clear copyright line. The first time we tried to fetch an Instagram Reel from an AWS IP, the CDN returned 403 before our HTTP client finished parsing the response headers. Same request from a Comcast IP — 200 OK. Pull a Reel's video URL and you get a 400-character monster — scontent-cdg4-2.cdninstagram.com/..., followed by a dozen query parameters with cryptic names like _nc_ohc and efg. We decoded every parameter in a live URL today, measured the actual time-to-live (108 hours, not the ~1 hour you might expect), and explain why downloader tools that cache these URLs silently break user downloads. Also: the base64-encoded efg parameter contains more metadata than the filename does.

The first surprise when you reverse-engineer an Instagram Reel download is that there's no single MP4 to fetch. There's an MPD file, separate video and audio representations, and a bunch of segment URLs with TTL-bound signatures. Copy a Reel URL, change /reel/ to /p/, hit it. You get the same post. Swap in /tv/ instead — same post again. Most downloader tools either don't know this or pretend they don't, and it leads to weird edge cases where pasting a perfectly valid link gets rejected. You got back an 8-bit bt709 file with no transfer curve metadata, no mastering display info, no Dolby Vision RPU.
